Curtis Coleman has had a distinguished, 20-year career in cybersecurity. For over 15 years, he led the cybersecurity program at Seagate Technology, a Fortune 500 multi-national digital storage manufacturing company. As the Vice President/CISO, he directed the efforts to implement cybersecurity policies, practices, operations, and technology to ensure the protection of Seagate’s data and systems.
Coleman currently serves on Oracle’s Cloud Security Advisory Board and has served on strategic advisory boards for other major corporations including Intel, Symantec, Palo Alto Networks, and Salesforce. He holds multiple cybersecurity certifications including Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Certified Information Security Manager (CISM).
National cybersecurity conferences frequently invite Coleman to speak to their audiences. He was listed in ExecRank’s “Top 150 Security Executives Rankings” from 2012 through 2017. In 2018 he decided to leave the corporate world to take on a new challenge of teaching and preparing the next generation of cybersecurity students at Oklahoma Christian University as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Director of Cybersecurity Program. He is interested in all aspects of cybersecurity, including research in artificial immune systems.
Coleman also enjoys hiking, camping, and leading a local crew of Venturing Scouts, a coed scouting group for 14-21 years old students. He is a certified Team USA Archery Coach Level II, NRA Rifle and Pistol Instructor, and holds Black Belt ranks in several Martial Arts.
This presentation will be a Case Study of the Uber Data Breach of 2016, and the recent arrest and federal charges against Uber’s former CISO, Joe Sullivan, for failing to report the breach to Uber customers and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). This is the very first time a CISO has been personally charged with a crime for not reporting a data breach! This case is still pending trial, but there is much CISOs can learn and apply to incident response and breach reporting.
